The Changing Seasons of Irish Flowers

One of the great joys of being farmer florists is the ever changing seasons of Irish grown flowers. The nature of growing and arranging with the seasons means that come April, when the flower season gets started here in Cork, there’s an ever changing variety of flowers all the way through to October/November.

The season starts with fancy daffodils (also called narcissus) and scented hyacinth leading into frilly ranunculus (the spring rose) and daisy like anemones. Once these have begun to bloom we will then be entering into our full favourite spring flower season — tulips!

Tulip season (April to May) is one of our favourite seasons, the array of blooms is endless. We grow around 7 types of tulips of all shapes and sizes. We especially love farm grown tulips as they last nearly 10 days + when harvested at the perfect time!

While the tulips are blooming other spring crops hit their stride. Plants that are biennial crops like foxglove, sweet rocket, campanula, sweet william and lunaria. We also start to see the hardy annuals that have over wintered like Iceland poppies, nigella, calendula, queen annes lace, cerinthe and larkspur come into bloom.

After the last of the tulips are harvested next come large purple alliums in late May/June which then lead into sweet peas, Irish peonies (we source locally from some amazing growers), lillies and roses from June to July. Early July is also when most of our summer crops start blooming in earnest, blooms such as sunflowers, rudbeckia, strawflowers, statice, scabiosa, phlox, yarrow, cosmos, zinnias and marigolds.

Our autumn crops will then include many of the summer flowers above. That said, autumn is really when our dahlias take center stage. This winter we divided hundreds of tubers that have been all stored away, waiting for the early summer heat to get growing and eventually blooming. These flowers carry us all the way to the last frost when chrysanthemums will just hit their stride!

Among all these crops we also have foliages and perennial flowers that bloom throughout the season giving our bouquets and arrangements an extra bit of flair.

Its a wild ride when we’re in the thick of growing season, but we couldn’t be without the variety of blooms, really make our bouquets shine! We believe its what our customers keep coming back for - an always changing mix of flowers #grownbetweenthebriars in Glanmire, Co. Cork, Ireland

What could be more better than an ever changing flower garden to send joy out into the world?
