Spring Bulb Shop is now open: We are about to get a delivery of 15,000+ spring bulbs!
It’s that time of year again, when the days are getting shorter and the gardens are winding down. Time to think about preparing for spring blooms. Well, the truth is, we’ve already been thinking about spring blooms, way back in May to be exact! Right when our tulips finished blooming in late spring. That’s the best time to get the order in for the following season, to get the best varieties and to have fresh in your mind what worked well and what we can change for next season.
Needless to say, we are adding new varieties to our growing list next year. We have four types of dutch iris, fritillaria and leucojum joining the growing beds this autumn. Dutch iris are typically thought of as florist irises, normally in blue or purple, we were lucky enough to get more complex colours in a fushia/red, blush, purpley/brown and white with yellow throats. They will all add a bit of drama to the late spring garden for sure!
All varieties in the bulb shop are for autumn planting, so once winter begins to end all the hard work we put into planting these beauties will pay off with a gorgeous spring display
Fritillaria Meleagris “Snakes head fritillaria” are joining this year with their nodding heads in a mix of mauves, pinks and whites they bloom early around the time of the tulips and go great in arrangments or grown in spring pots.
Leucojum or snow flakes are much like early snow drops in the garden but bloom a little bit later and have longer stems. They will easily perennialize in the garden, a welcome sight for years to come. A great cut flower which hold for a week or more in the vase.
We ordered so many hyacith this year! pink, purple, lilac, white and yellow! Nothing beats their scent, they can be grown outside, in pots or even forced indoors for a welcomed display during a grey winter days. We tend to get blooms in early March in the garden here in Cork. Don’ miss out on the multiflora type which has several stems per bulb that look like blue bells,
Tulips are always on order every year for us, no spring flower beats the array of colours or flower shapes they are grown in. We personally love the doubles and parrot type tulips, they last amazingly in the vase too! Sometimes even two weeks if picked at the right time. If you want to pick tulips in the garden to come back next season be sure to leave two leaves so the bulb can regenerate for the following year!
Spring anemones are one of the most sought after flowers for florists and wedding work, nothing beats locally grow, as they really resent being shipped. We chose two panda types with black centres for our seasonal flower growing needs. Each bulb can produce between 10-20 flowers stems!
We are so excited to share these spring blooms with our customers! The shipment will be arriving next week after the 16th so we hope to get the orders out by late October.
We will also send out growing guides for each order
